They always look cheap and unclassy in any car and I loathe them with an unbridled passion (except wire-wheels in classic cars).

Exact same wheels other than the chrome. I remember wondering if there was a way to strip the chrome, then thinking maybe I could swap with someone who wanted chrome, then I just decided to drive the car.

My personal rule and reasoning as to what wheels should and shouldn't be chromed comes down to one simple factor: wheel material. If the wheel is steel, chrome is fine. Aluminum? NO CHROME .

No only does chrome have a function on steel (it keeps the base metal from rusting far better than paint or powder coat can), you can still tell that the wheel is steel underneath. Whether it's wire wheels or pressed disc wheels, they still look as though they're actually made of metal. Not only can you often see the texture of the steel, the wheels are formed in such a way that it's impossible to mistake them for any material other than steel.

Chromed aluminum, whether it be cast (machined or raw), forged, or billet, can me shaped into any form imaginable, and can have a completely smooth finish. It doesn't look any different than chromed plastic.

When your wheels don't look any different than those of a toy, there's something wrong.

I thought the Lexus LS430 looked good on them.

But that's probably because the rest of the car is so bland, some shine was needed to lift its appeal.

There's not very many modern steel wheels that aren't either covered by plastic hubcaps, or merely painted silver. GM half-ton trucks have usually had the option of chromed steel wheels. Most of them aren't beautiful, but they're not bad.
